Hydropower is a highly flexible and stable energy source worldwide. Water can be stored in reservoirs until needed, allowing for quick changes in production and low start and stop costs. Well-regulated reservoirs can provide short-term flexibility within an hour, as well as long-term flexibility over days, weeks and seasons. This makes hydropower particularly well suited for a better power system with more intermittent power from other sources.
Hydropower provides almost all of Nepal's domestic electricity generation on the grid. The economy is experiencing rising power demand, with forecasts that it will more than double by 2025 compared to 2020, making clear the need for new capacity.
